When Jon Snow goes to Castle Black for the first time he encounters few key characters there and one of them is Maester Aemon, brother of the Night Watch an old but wise man. Fans for a long time speculated about Jon’s parentage and R+L=J theory while Maester Aemon probably knew it all this time. He shares his wisdom with Jon Snow few times and the first time was when Jon heard what happened to Ned in King’s Landing and was on his way to revenge him but first he sought council with Maester Aemon. And this is what Aemon said.
Love is the death of duty. If the day should ever come when your lord father was forced to choose between honor on the one hand and those he loves on the other, what would he do?… What is honor compared to a woman’s love? And what is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms? Or a brother’s smile?
In this conversation with Jon he reveals that he is Targaryen and those things he talks about are the things he missed when joined the Watch. But these things also apply to Ned Stark’s decision and Jon’s story. As we follow Aemon’s words woman’s love could be Lyanna’s love, the feel of newborn son could be the feel of Lyanna’s son and a brother’s smile could be Stark family bond. The question is why Aemon kept this from Jon, maybe as a wise guy he thought that a man should figure out his roots on his own. Anyway we may never find out what Maester Aemon really knew about Jon’s parents, but now we know for sure that Bran knows and it is only a matter of time before he reaches Jon.
